Best Things to Do in New Braunfels, Texas
Stars and Stripes Drive-In Theatre
The Stars and Stripes is one of the few remaining drive-in movie theaters in the United States, and it has been in operation since 1956. Located in the heart of downtown, this family-owned and run institution is open Friday through Sunday, rain or shine, all year round.
Every night, three different films are shown on three enormous screens. Customers receive two films for the price of one when they purchase tickets for a double feature at the theater. Additionally, the drive-in features a 50’s-themed café with reasonable refreshments such as burgers and fries, corn dogs, funnel cakes, and popcorn, among other things. Tickets can be purchased in person at the theater or through the internet.
Faust Street Bridge, New Braunfels, Texas
For more than a century, the Faust Street Bridge has served as a landmark in New Braunfels. This Whipple truss bridge across the Guadalupe River in Comal County was built in 1887 and spans the river. The bridge was one of the state’s first toll-free passes across a canal, as most of the state’s bridges at the time were owned and maintained by private individuals.
The bridge was also one of the first multi-span Whipple truss bridges built in the United States, and it is one of only a few such structures still standing in the state. Before it began moving automobiles across the river, the Faust Street Bridge was used to ferry horse-drawn carriages and wagons across the waterway. The bridge was destroyed by fire in 1978, and it was forced to close to traffic. Bicycles and pedestrians are now permitted to cross the bridge.
Natural Bridge Caverns, New Braunfels Texas
Natural Bridge Caverns offers a variety of outdoor adventures and family-friendly activities for the entire family to enjoy. 180 feet below the earth, guests can marvel at the stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and rock formations that can be seen in the caverns. The Canopy Challenge, on the other hand, requires them to ascend to the top of a 60-foot obstacle course and then jet back down using the zip line.
There is also the option of gem and fossil mining. Once the excitement is over, tourists can relax with a snack at the on-site café or buy souvenirs at the souvenir shop on the premises. Suitable for both children and adults, all of the activities are available. The caverns are open every day of the week, with the exception of significant holidays.
Landa Falls New Braunfels, TX
Nothing about a trip to New Braunfels is complete without at least one tubing ride down the Comal River. Landa Falls, which is located on the river bank at the Wurstfest grounds, is one of the most popular tubing outfitters in the area. They provide one of the longest floats on the river, and the section of the river where they operate is less steep, making the trip slower and more ideal for families with little children.
Landa Falls offers tubes with or without bottoms, cooler tubes, and cooler/tube combos to suit your needs and budget. They also distribute free life vests to anyone who needs them. After returning to the festival grounds, you can enjoy a pleasant lunch on the beautifully maintained grounds of the Wurstfest festival or, if you still haven’t had enough fun, take another tubing trip down the river, which is included in the price of your festival admission.
Canyon Lake, New Braunfels, TX
Canyon Lake, located around halfway between Austin and San Antonio and less than 14 miles from New Braunfels, is one of the deepest bodies of water in Texas. It is a favorite destination for anglers, boaters, and anyone who enjoys spending a hot summer day on the water. The lake, which is located on the Guadalupe River, has an 80-mile stretch of picturesque beachfront to enjoy.
The lake is surrounded by five different neighborhoods, which are also home to a thriving marina as well as two yacht clubs. Picnic areas, boat ramps, and camping are all available in eight public parks managed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Landa Park
Since its founding in 1898, Landa Park has served as a popular urban retreat for both residents and visitors alike. This vast park, which is situated on 51 acres along the river, contains a variety of facilities that provide amusement and relaxation for people of all ages.
Paddle boats on the lake that is occasionally stocked with trout, a lovely picnic area under the shade of ancient oaks, a miniature train that runs from end to end of the park, a mini-golf course and an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, and two scenic hiking trails: the Panther Canyon Nature Trail and the Harry Landa Tree Trail – are just some of the highlights of this park. With 96 different varieties of trees, the William and Dolores Schumann Arboretum is sure to please nature lovers.
New Braunfels Conservation Society
There are three buildings on the 3.5-acre site of the New Braunfels Conservation Society, each dedicated to preserving the distinctive history and way of life of the area’s early settlers. There are eighteen historic buildings in New Braunfels that tell the story of life in the town since it was founded in 1845, including a bed and breakfast, saloon, schoolhouse, barbershop, and music studio.
The New Braunfels Conservation Society is comprised of 18 buildings, each of which is historically significant and tells the story of life in 1845 in New Braunfels.
A lovely Bed and Breakfast, a one-room schoolhouse constructed of limestone going back to 1870, and the original real Sunday House, replete with a genuine outhouse and original ancestral tools, are among the attractions. There are several more attractions within the conservation society, including an old-fashioned historic saloon, an operational and very adorable barbershop, a garage that houses a genuine and meticulously restored 1907 REO automobile, and even Stefan Haelbig’s own music studio.
