7 Best Things to Do in Austin

Congress Avenue Bridge

The Congress Avenue Bridge is home to an Austin tradition. Every night, at sunset crowds, gather on the bridge and watch as thousands of bats fly out into Lady Bird Lake below them in search of food! It’s one of those only-in -Austin happenings you have got to see. With a population of over 1 million, these bats can be seen throughout the night swooping down on pesky insects like mosquitoes. The colony is actually one of the largest in North America and takes flight each night to feed on pesky insects like mosquitoes, making them a local hero.

Blanton Museum of Art

Located at The University of Texas, the Blanton Museum of Art houses an extensive collection. There are pieces from different time periods, ranging as far back to the Renaissance and Roman times up until modern day paintings in their contemporary gallery which can be explored alongside other works like pottery or prints belonging solely within these respective art forms’ domains, all with equal merit attached to them. It features both Native American and Latin American art as well, making it one museum worth checking out! Teresita Fernández Stacked Waters is an artistic and immersive experience that will leave you breathless. The museum atrium floor has acrylic panels in ombre shades of blue covering every inch from top-to-bottom – creating the feeling like you standing on water with nothing left but the sky above.

The Continental Club

The venue’s red front doors and solid black exterior set the tone for this well-worn, slightly gritty concert hall. But it nicely fit into its storied past–the internationally acclaimed place that has launched many careers including those of Stevie Ray Vaughan as well other musicians from all kinds of genres (blues jazz rock country). The crowd in The Continental Club varies based on the show (so do the cover charges), but everyone is here for an evening of live music and bottled beers—usually as part one in a night’s worth bar-hopping along SoCo’s lively South Congress Avenue. First Thursdays offer particularly big events when the entire street turns into an enormous block party with late openings, special offers, and plenty more going down.

Barton Springs Municipal Pool

The Barton Springs Municipal Pool is a massive, public swimming hole that benefits from the natural spring-fed waters of Zilker Park. The setting inside this well-kept outdoor space remains blissfully undisturbed by Austin’s growth as it provides shady spots for sunbathing and relaxation amidst gorgeous lawns! The water at this pool is a cool 68 degrees year-round, making it much needed during extremely hot summers and pleasant in winter too! You can find many topless people here (though sightings are rare). The parking lot fills up quickly so be prepared for a bit of an extra walk.

Rainey Street

Walk down Rainey Street at night, and you’ll be surprised by what appears before your eyes. From old-fashioned wooden verandas to modern bars with outside seating areas on neighboring courts — it’s clear that this area has been revitalized over the years into something uniquely Austin: A vibrant patchwork quilt of different cultures living in harmony under one roof! If you are looking to have a good time, then this is the place for it. You can find food trucks tucked in alongside some of the most renowned nightlife spots like Half Step, Craft Pride, Geraldine’s,  Clive Bar, Emmer & Rye, are  among others. Whether you’re relaxing on the porch with your kids or taking in some sun by a picnic table during the day, this place has something for everyone! And at night? You can party hard right next door.

Mount Bonnell

Mount Bonnell is a well-manicured outdoor landmark that sits in the tiny neighborhood. The attraction was originally called “Covert park” but is more commonly known as just ‘Mount Bounnel’ because it has such amazing summit views. The staircase is a gentle, limestone-paved route that leads up to an elegant lookout with sweeping views out over handsome Lake Austin. And though it may not be considered much of a hike for those who are more active outdoorsy types (you can easily scale this in flip flops), it’s the perfect spot to take the time and enjoy watching sunsets over the lake and the famous arches of the Pennybacker Bridge.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding on Lady Bird Lake

What’s more fun than a day on the water? Crowds flock to Lady Bird Lake all year long for one thing: kayaking and paddleboarding. There are plenty of companies that rent out boats, like Rowing Dock or Texas Rowing Center- just be sure not get too excited about how many people have chosen your favorite spot because it might end up being crowded when you show up! If dogs make their way into these activities then this area is also dog friendly. The best way to enjoy this natural wonder is by taking in all you can from one place. Check out the birds, fish, and wildlife around town or on your boat as well as what lies at the shoreline—tree-lined shores with striking lakefront homes provide perfect photo opportunities. If you were camping near here during bat season (May through October), then watching 1 million bats fly overhead each night will give you a memorable experience.
